As first-year Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine installs his playbook Authentic P.K Subban Jersey , he's got one of the best to deliver the daily tests: two-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Through a week of training camp, Pettine's defense is passing those early quizzes.

By Pettine's count, his defense has seven interceptions of Rodgers. Three came at Monday's practice.

"It certainly gives our guys some confidence," Pettine said Wednesday, an off day for the team. "What a gift we have on defense to be able to go against one of the most elite quarterbacks to ever play the game. You talk about wearing ankle weights. That's a tremendous thing for us, and for us to have that success, it's a challenge for him. He's not going against the same defense that he had gone against and maybe he got used to over years and years and years that he figured out. He's still trying to figure us out, and there's that element.

" I just love the competition part of it. It's great when our guys can make a play. I think that from the beginning of camp, that's the bottom line: We've had some great competition."

Continuing that momentum will be the challenge as the Packers return to the field Thursday and look forward to Saturday's Family Night practice at sold-out Lambeau Field. On Monday, two defensive starters, third-year safety Kentrell Brice and fourth-year inside linebacker Jake Ryan, suffered significant injuries. Ryan tore his right ACL and is out for the season. Brice appeared to have reinjured the right ankle that required season-ending surgery last year.

At linebacker, the Packers will turn to Oren Burks, a third-round pick out of Vanderbilt who had taken some of the first-team reps from Ryan. Burks is one of five players on the depth chart participating in their first NFL training camp. The only remaining veteran is third-year starter Blake Martinez.

"(Burks) has flashed some things," Pettine said. "The transition from the college game to the NFL Josh Bailey Jersey , it takes some time. He's very intelligent, he processes very quickly, but there's still just that learning curve. . We'll see how it plays out. It's a big loss with Jake. I know there's certainly open lines of communication with the personnel department."

At safety, Brice on Tuesday said he was thankful the injury "wasn't as serious as it could have been." Until he returns, the Packers figure to move forward with Josh Jones, a second-round pick last year.

Brice is a pure defensive back and Jones, a combination defensive back and linebacker, so they bring different skill sets. That could force Pettine to make some adjustments if Brice's injury lingers into the regular season.

"At this point, we're asking them to do all of the menu," Pettine said. "Whether it's a job during the season we might not have them do, we're asking them to do it all (now). But I think we certainly have thoughts on Kentrell is best at this, Josh is best at this, and kind of marry that together with a package; I think that's kind of on us as coaches to begin to shape a game plan and have the right personnel doing the right jobs when we're out there. But it's just too early."

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Nick Pivetta is struggling so far in June. He will try to turn his month around against the slumping St. Louis Cardinals.

The Phillies and Cardinals open a three-game set on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park.

The teams are meeting for the second time in a month after splitting a four-game set in May at Busch Stadium.

Pivetta (4-6, 4.25 ERA) has an 8.36 ERA and opponents are hitting .352 with a .940 OPS against him through three June starts. The 25-year-old had a 3.26 ERA and .230 batting average against during his first 11 starts of the season.

Pivetta’s hardships were evident in his last start.

Facing the Colorado Rockies, he allowed six runs Chukwuma Okorafor Color Rush Jersey , eight hits and three walks in five innings of a 7-2 loss on Wednesday. It was the fourth straight start in which Pivetta took a loss.

“I think that his composure hasn’t been perfect, but he’s a young, developing pitcher,” Phillies manager Gabe Kapler told MLB.com after Pivetta’s start. “He’s going to have his bumps. He’s going to have hiccups along the way. I think this is just an indication of that.”

Pivetta did not pitch against the Cardinals when the Phillies faced them last month, but he saw St. Louis twice last year. Pivetta allowed seven earned runs and struck out 12 in 11 innings during those starts.

Pivetta will be facing a Cardinals team that posted a 5-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night but still has lost five times in its last seven games. The Cardinals (37-32) enter the series four games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central.

Right-hander Miles Mikolas (7-2, 2.43) will be on the mound in the series opener. Mikolas, who spent the last three seasons pitching in Japan, leads the Cardinals with an 0.96 WHIP and his 2.43 ERA is the best in their rotation.

The Cardinals are 9-4 in Mikolas’ starts, but they lost in his last outing. He gave up three runs and six hits in six innings against the San Diego Padres in a 4-2 loss on Tuesday.

“He was throwing the ball well, and he came back and threw the ball well (after a three-run inning),” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny told reporters after Mikolas’ last start. “He’s on a nice roll.”

The Phillies are looking for their third series victory in a row. They are returning home for three games against the Cardinals after taking two of three against the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend

Philadelphia was a 10-9 winner over Milwaukee on Sunday as Maikel Franco went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. The third baseman was making just his second start since June 6 and homered for the first time since May 26.

“Mikey has shown an incredible attitude recently,” Kapler said when he met with reporters after the victory. “He’s come to the ballpark and prepared, even when he has not been in the lineup.”

Rhys Hoskins also homered and is batting .333 (10-for-30) with four homers and 11 RBIs since returning from a broken jaw.
